Treating Depression

There are many different forms of treatment available. However, the most important factor in treating any depression is accepting that you need help.

treating depressionThe most common treatment for depression is antidepressant medication, plus therapy. According to WHO (2015) Anti-depressants are recommended as a possible course of treatment for moderate to severe depression. The medication allows the person suffering from depression to feel much better. Then he or she will be in a position to work on the problems which may be causing the depressive state.

Seeing a doctor is necessary before making a decision about the kind of treatment you should follow. You need a diagnosis for depression which only a professional can give you.

Here’s an overview of possible ways of treating depression:

Medication

Various medications for depression exist including:

  • Antidepressants
  • Anxiety medication
  • SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
  • Antipsychotic medication
  • Anticonvulsants

One thing I want to emphasize is the importance of changing your attitude and thinking. Part of treating your depression, whether you are taking medication or not, includes helping yourself. But, how can you do that?

How to Think More Positively

Think positively – this sometimes seems impossible if your symptoms of depression are severe. But, you can do it! It is a matter of changing your focus. So how can you do this? Well, in any given situation you can choose whether you focus on the negative or the positive. Focusing on the negative feeds your depression. Here is an example:

You tell yourself “I am slow when I need to learn something new”. This is obviously negative and will increase your depression. Turn it into something positive – find a positive angle. How about telling yourself “In order to learn something new I take my time to try to understand the concept first before I go into the details. This helps me to avoid mistakes which happen when I just rush into it”? Now this is much more positive! You can do this with ANY situation, look for the positive, it is there somewhere.
